I kinda love the vibe that every niche has it's mastodon instance. If you want to know what's happening in that field, you can just browse the local posts. No need for lists and following massive amounts of stuff.

So this is what happens behind the scene when you post a toot. All of #fediverse sends requests to your server within seconds. I can imagine why Mastodon instances are so overloaded these days.

Almost 180k new users joined #mastodon yesterday, a new record. This third #twitterMigration wave happened after Musk's Twitter 2.0 ultimatum to #Twitter workers. Each wave is stronger than the previous one. Here is my updated plot showing the three consecutive waves.

Long post on self hosting labour

I've been thinking about mastodon hosting and whether the labour of running an instance for friends and family makes sense.

@abnv and I have been talking about it on and off, and he's way more bullish on the idea than I am. Looking at the journa.host blow up, I'm starting to realise how much work an instance is, and how much we take for granted on Twitter and co.

Holding off moving completely to self-hosted #gotosocial instance till it reaches better feature parity with Mastodon. One thing I'll definitely miss is the Glitch-soc UI.

kind of disappointed by the nixcon/ #nix / #nixos talks, didnt really find myself gripped or inspired by any of the talks. really want some talks about *programming in nix*, or using nixpkgs derivations and builders, etc. something a level more complex than the nix pills but more narrativized than ctrl-f'ing the nixpkgs docs... who will show me how callPackage works under the hood or how to implement plugin patterns in my nixpkgs?
